Johannes Leimena School of Public Leadership (JL SoPL)
Jakarta, August 9-15, 2015
“Christians in Nation’s Public Leadership”, delivered by Andreas Yewangoe – Chairman of PGI (Communion of Churches in Indonesia) Consultative Council 2014-2019, was the opening program for the Johannes Leimena School of Public Leadership (JL SoPL) held by Institut Leimena. Yewangoe emphasized that in Indonesia, there are many Christian leaders who sincerely held on to the principals of Christianity. Among them are Johannes Leimena, T.B. Simatupang, A.M. Tambunan, M. Siregar, G.J.S.S. Ratulangie, Latuharhary, Silas Papare, etc. Present and future leaders need to learn from them.
Learning directly from the expert, like what the JL SoPL 2015 participants experienced, is a rare opportunity. In this program, they were able to meet and learn about the 1945 Constitution directly from Jakob Tobing, Chairman of Ad Hoc Committee I People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) for the 1945 Constitution Amendment. Jakob Tobing explained in detail the history of the 1945 Amendment and its impact to citizen’s role.
Currently, all social, political, or governmental organizations are formed on one basis which are the agreement between the forefathers, publicly known as constitution. In Indonesia, our constitution is documented in a written document, which is the 1945 Constitution. That is one of the information delivered by Maruarar Siahaan, former Constitutional Court Judge (2003-2009), in the session about “the Basic Principals of Constitution”.
What is able to bind more than 500 tribes, with various religions and culture along 17,508 islands, spanning from 6° LU – 11° LS, and 95°BT – 141°BT? What conception is able to hold the largeness, wideness, and plurality in Indonesia? Pancasila! Pancasila became the primary philosophy of Indonesian nationhood. The idea of Pancasila as the foundation of the state was built from its history. It needs to be embedded into reality, not only as a rethoric or political stage. This was the essence of Pancasila which was delivered by Yudi Latif.
