Johannes Leimena School of Public Leadership (JL SoPL)
Jakarta, August 9-15, 2015
The session of Public Policy Advocacy delivered by Rusdi Marpaung (founder member of Imparsial, the Indonesian Human Rights Monitor), encouraged participants of JL SoPL 2015 to start being actively involved in public policy advocacy. Rusdi explained that public policy needs to be monitored closely by the people. We cannot only rely on law enforcement because often times those in power uses them, not to serve the public interest, but to protect their personal Interest. It is very important for the people to be actively involved in monitoring public policies, both in the national and regional level; monitoring Policy Plan, Regional Policy Plans and other policy product. The 1945 Constitution Amendment guaranteed our participation to do so.
“Be aware of budgeting process and make sure that it goes according to the procedure!” These two important message was the essence of Advocacy for Budget Monitoring workshop, delivered by Mercy Chriesty Barends, a House of Representatives member from the PDI Perjuangan fraction. The goal of budget monitoring is to (1) ensure that the regional budgeting is according to the Regional Budgeting Plan policy and any other related policy; (2) prevent deviance in managing the regional budgeting for public accountability; and (3) detect acts of deviance that indicates loss for regional budget.
Every Indonesian has one vote. That vote is valuable and will determine the nation’s welfare. People are encouraged not to ignore their vote or sell it. This session about Your Vote is Valuable was presented by Budi Setiamarga and Daniel Adipranata from Institut Leimena. Through this session, participants are hoped to gain the ability to inform others in their area on the importance of citizen participation in the Elections.
