Oath of Youth! The historical moment in 1928 that still awakens the spirit of young Indonesians whenever they recall it. How could they not? The event that’s referred to as the “birth” of the nation of Indonesia was initiated by youths – demonstrating that big things can happen from the hands of young people.
At that time, Muhammad Yamin was 25 years old, Amir Syarifudin 23 years, and Johannes Leimena 23 years. Along with their friends, they organized the 1928 Youth Congress. They had a vision and determination. They dared to dream and were willing to sacrifice for the nation.
Inspired by them, today’s young people want to follow their steps. On June 16th, young people gathered together in the Community ’28 to re-ignite the spirit for our nation’s future. Community ’28 was named after the event of the Oath of Youth in 1928. It’s to show the determination of today’s youths to have a vision and willingness to sacrifice for the nation, like what their predecessors have done.
Community ’28 was launched with a discussion on “Pancasila, Our House”, where Jakob Tobing was the keynote speaker. 27 people came from various youth movement backgrounds, including college students (UI and UPH), academicians, church (GBKP and GPIB) and NGO activists. The diverse backgrounds made the discussion very lively. A number of issues around Pancasila were addressed enthusiastically.
After the discussion, the participants got to know each other closer in small groups during lunch time. It’s no surprise that they carried on the discussion in those groups! Their conversation focused on their experiences and observations of issues and challenges faced by the Indonesian people.
Here are some impressions from the first meeting of the Community ’28:
“Giving a chance to exchange ideas with fellow youth for the progress of this nation, ideologicall and politically.” (Rahardika, University of Indonesia)
“Added and opened our horizon on national and social issues.” (Erino Theopani, Youth Council, GPIB church)
“Getting to know Mr. Jakob Tobing closer.” (Jan Ramos, GBKP church)
Community ’28 plans to hold an event every two months. The programs will go beyond discussion only. One thing for sure, Community ’28 is inviting today’s younger generation to once again dream and give for our nation, Indonesia! (VW)
