Since January 2011, using makeshift teaching equipment (small white boards and tarpaulins) at the “Canaan” farmers’ group’s meeting place (hut; lopo), Santhy Chamdra –Institut Leimena’s field staff– initiated a study group for elementary school children in Manusak Village, East Kupang district, Kupang regency, of East Nusa Tenggara province. The initiative was driven by the desire for the children in this village to increase their knowledge outside school hours. In this group, they can ask about whatever subjects they do not understand in school.
For the time being, subjects taught are English and Mathematics, though it is possible for other subjects to be covered as well. The children in this study group are from the 2nd to 5th grade elementary school. For English language, the material taught is the same, while for mathematics, the exercise is differentiated according to their school grade. They meet twice a week, between 2.00 to 4.00 pm every Monday and Friday.

In addition to English and Mathematics subjects, the children are also taught about good character and behavior. Character building should start early to prepare them to become good people who can build this village.
Up to now there are about 15 children who study in this group. Hopefully this study group can help these children to excel in school and improve their knowledge, so that they can achieve their dreams.
