Public Lecture
Tentena Christian University, Central Sulawesi, June 19th, 2013
In the 1928 Youth’s Oath, Jong Celebes (“youths from Sulawesi”) was one of the youth organizations that declared it. The spirit of nationhood displayed by the Jong Celebes is still preserved among the youths in Sulawesi today, especially the students at the Tentena Christian University (UNKRIT). Founded in 2007, the university carries the mission to educate the next generation, not only intellectually, but also emotionally and spiritually, including their sense of unity as one nation, Indonesia.
In partnership with the Central Sulawesi Christian Church Synod, the Institut Leimena held a public lecture for the UNKRIT students at the Rector’s Hall auditorium.
Budi Setiamarga and Matius Ho of Institut Leimena were the main speakers in the public lecture, which was held on June 19th, 2013. Faculty staffs and students learned about the idea of Indonesia in the 1945 Constitution’s Preamble. How the idea of Indonesia in the Preamble was shaped by the historical events in the world and Indonesia, from the US Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the Indonesia’s proclamation of independence in 1945.
The importance of the amended 1945 Constitution was also explained to show how Indonesia transformed itself from the world’s second biggest authoritarian country to become the world’s third biggest democracy. After the constitutional amendment, now the citizens have very important role in shaping the nation’s future. One of them is by using their voting rights smartly in regional and national elections. When the citizens participate in the elections smartly and responsibly, the future of Indonesia will be brighter.
